Racism is not a state of being.

We bristle at the thought

That who we are is static and unchanging

That that self is racist.

Even a white supremacist says:

“No, I’m not racist!

I just want our country to stay our country,

And for you to go back to your own!”

Racism is found in our thoughts and our actions

The way we live

The way we make others feel

The way we don’t feel how others feel.

None of us is born racist

And the thoughts don’t go with us when we die.

But the effects of our actions will

In the ripples through space and time and flesh and bone.

Racism is the work of this moment

In the life we touch today

And the seeds we choose not to plant.
